History

In February 2007, Together with the Children (TWC) was founded in Denver, Colorado to be a sister organization for JUCONI in Puebla, Mexico. TWC, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, spreads awareness about our work in Mexico and offers opportunities for people in the United States to get involved helping street-involved children.

Junto Con los Niños or JUCONI was founded in 1989 in Puebla, one of the poorer states of Mexico. It grew out of an Anglo-Mexican initiative of the British non-governmental organization International Children’s Trust, directed in Mexico by Sarah Thomas, and two local Mexican organizations, Fundación Fuad Abed Halabi and IPODERAC. The launch of this innovative inter-institutional project was led by the Puebla educationalist, Gabriel Benítez Esperón.

JUCONI is registered in Mexico as a nonprofit, non-political and non-religious organization. We are a dynamic organization, continually seeking to improve the quality of our services. The JUCONI Program provides integrated and personalized services to 350 children and 150 parents each year.

In 1994, at the invitation of Ecuadorian organizations and under the auspices of the International Children’s Trust, Sarah Thomas and Gabriel Benítez took the ground-breaking experience of JUCONI to Ecuador. JUCONI Ecuador was founded in Guayaquil with the aim of demonstrating the relevance of the JUCONI Model to other Latin American cities. JUCONI Mexico and JUCONI Ecuador still work very closely together, enriching each other’s development.

A Technical Support Center (TSC) was established in 2001 to provide services, based on the experience of the JUCONI Program and its tried and tested methodology and instruments, to help strengthen other nonprofits and government programs working with street-involved and excluded children. Through the TSC, JUCONI indirectly benefits up to 2,000 children each year.
